iPhone 3.0 Software - Beyond the hype

I sacrificed my time to bring you all the high points of the iPhone 3.0 software.

First - let's start with the rumors up to this point: copy and paste, background processes, notifications...and - well, that's enough to get us started. We followed the news on Engadget and Gizmodo live blogs. Good job, guys.

Now, for the Executive Summary - The event started at 1pm EDT at Apple HQ in Cupertino.

3.0 iPhone/iPod Touch Software News [Coming this Summer]

For Developers-

• 1000 new APIs or a bunch of new ways to work with the OS
• Developers can integrate Google Maps into applications now, connect devices peer to peer and give users options to purchase
  
• ESPN app showed off streaming video.
• Oracle showed off some apps to push key indicators to your phone (ex: Iventory Item: Bear Pants - need replenished).
  
• iPhone adapter port can now be used to integrate other hardware. Medical devices were shown as examples
  
• Other features in SDK - LDAP, Encrypted Profiles, Proxy, CTIA Profiles, VPN & Parental Controls
  

For the End User -

• COPY AND PASTE!!!! YAY!!!! Works across applications as well. That would have been a big let down if id id not, but at least they proved it. You can also copy and paste pics as well.
  
• Landscape Keyboard - the landscape keyboard will be available across resident apps - they previewed it in the Mail app.
  
• MMS- Send picture messages, audio, locations and contacts...no video, though [Will not work on original 2G iPhone]
  
• CalDav Support - if you use Google or Yahoo calendar, this is a good thing
• Voice Memos - added as a resident application
• Subscriptions
• Spotlight Search* - search contacts; search mail - if the message isn't on your phone, it will continue to search the server; seems to search all resident Apple applications
• New Stock app
  

So, for the most part, it fulfilled most people's expectations. The Spotlight search was one we did not see coming.

We are going out on a limb and going to wonder outloud if this new 3.0 software is primarily for the iPhone 4G (or whatever they decide to call it). Seems like June would be the perfect time to drop a 4G with a video camera and all the new software at the same time ...might as well make a 32 and 64GB while they are at it. And for good measure, they should also inlcude it on the 10inch iPod touch...that sure would be a good platform to make use of hardware that connects using the adapter port. Who knows? We'll keep listening and let you know what we hear.

Week In Review - What Happend At MacWorld & CES 2009

The answer is not as much as what happened at MacWorld, but what will not happen again ...Apple. Seriously, Apple - the mac daddy of them all will no longer be at MacWorld starting next year. Here are some of the other stories we found from MacWorld

Apple, sans Jobs, made its last keynote at Macworld this year by introducing iLife 09, iWork.com, tiered pricing for songs on iTunes and a 17 inch MacBook Pro.

For the first time in eleven years, the keynote was not given by Steve Jobs. While rumors swirl around Cupertino and the future of Job at Apple, the verdict is in on Apple attending future MacWorlds.

Slingbox announced an iPhone application to stream media from your home to your iPhone. It is coming march 09. No price was announced, but if you use a slingbox, it will probably be well worth it.

Want a better phone interface for your iPhone? Pinger, a free download from the Apple App store, is billed as an 'improvement' of phone interface. Searching, sorting and more. It also has the ability to direct message using twitter, facebook as well as other IM and social apps.

We are going to get the iPhone toting producers to download it and let you know if it is worth your time. At free, the price is hard to beat.

CES 2009
Here are four of our favorite places to get coverage for CES and other tech events.

And...and ...ok...come closer...too close....that's better ...we have some REALLY COOL things going on that will shake the underlying foundation of social and economic systems around the world. Nevermind, that was subprime mortgages, but we do have some announcements that will change the way you listen to TechTalk. Here comes Tom, I've said too much...stay tuned.

TechTalk Product Review - Otterbox Rocks

The OtterBox 7030 laptop case is described on OtterBox’s site as Waterproof, dustproof, drop-proof, dirtproof protection. High impact Polypropylene construction for maximum strength. Shock-absorbing Elastomer corner bumpers. This case includes a shoulder strap, and a removable file folder accessory for files, pens, business cards and more.

We simply call it one mean motor-scooter. Not only is it lockable, it also has …wait for it…automatic pressure equalization in case it is submerged in water. The OtterBox is rated ‘MIL-STD 810F’ and IP67. Those equate to approximately 30 minutes in one meter of water. We did not test this feature. We have to take their word on it until we get a bigger budget.

It comes with customizable bumpers to ensure a snug fit for your laptop. We should note is it will not fit all laptops. Please check the site to make sure yours will fit. There is no give. It do or it don’t.

There is not much more to say about this case. It is simple. It is tough. It is a must have for mobile workers in extreme conditions – sandhogs, we are talking to you. Weighing in a just under seven pounds for the case only, it is not the lightest in the market. But, we are also pretty sure the doors at Fort Knox are not light either. Overall, the protection you get for the extra weight is well worth it if protection is a priority for your laptop.

We also tried out Otterbox’s iPhone case. The case retails for around $50. Considering it is water resistant and tough as nails, you can look at that as a $50 insurance policy for your device. It is also the best looking case we have seen for those that clip the phone to the belt. It has all of the same characteristics of the laptop case. They have PDA cases for iPhone, Treos, iPods, iPaqs and more on the way. We are not saying this is the toughest case on the face of the earth, but we are saying you should let us know if you find one that is tougher.

You can find all of these at www.otterbox.com and most likely in the offices of MI6. We can’t wait to see what they come up with next. Whatever it is, we are not worried about breaking it or whatever it encases.

Keith and his pals at NetworkWorld published their gift guide not too long ago. He will be on the show to tell us about it and other gift ideas, but it is ok to peek. For all of you that get tired of words without pictures, here is some TV to hold you over until you get back to hulu. NetworkWorld does their Week In Review on Friday to keep you up to date until Sunday.

There will not be a quiz, but keep an eye out for the CES Preview, RoboLegManbot from Honda & The Mars Lander tweeted its last tweet before freezing to death due to Martian winter temperatures. The twitter account has since been deleted...too bad. Would be nice to leave up. I am sure it lives on somewhere.

For those that made it this far, rumor has it TechTalk is going to team with CNET to start your 2009 "Listen to every TechTalk this year" resolution off right. Tom also privied the producer to some exclusive interviews from some prominent NYC IT professionals. If you are good and listen every week, we might air them before Christmas. We might make them available here only. We like to keep you guessing...and I have to ask Tom.
